Malaria Vector Control

Malaria and Anopheles Mosquito
Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. For a mosquito to be involved in transmission of human Malaria, it must belong to anthropophagic group. The known mosquito for transmission of Malaria is a female Mosquito Anopheline mosquito (a female Anopheles mosquito).

A bite of a person by Anopheles Mosquito does not always amount to the person being infected with Malaria parasites. The Mosquito must be carrying the parasites from its previous host whom must have been suffering from Malaria parasites. When a mosquito bites an infected person, it ingests microscopic malaria parasites found in the persons blood. The Malaria parasites then grow in the mosquito for a week or more before infection is to be passed to another person. Thereafter, if the mosquito bites another person, the parasites are then transmitted from the mosquitos mouth into the persons blood.
Today Malaria poses the greatest challenge amid fears of environmental changes resulting from environment degradation and lifestyle changes. The registered high temperatures around the globe and especially in Sub Sahara African, cases of Malaria recorded has eminently gone up amid efforts made by the concerned health organizations across the globe to sustain Malaria. It is estimated that a child dies after every 30 seconds with Malaria related illness in the world today. Although preventable and curable, the worlds population is all at risk of Malaria especially those from a low income countries and travellers such as businessmen and diplomats. Malaria does not only affect people directly but also takes toll of the economy of any given affected country. This is so by the country directing a lot of resources which otherwise would be geared for development to fight the Malaria and other related ailments.

Methods of Controlling Malaria Transmission Vectors
A lot of research has been done and even others underway to date aimed in devising proper or most assured interventions that would control, prevent and eliminate malaria and its causative agents (vectors). There are a number of ways today that have been improvised that are in practice aimed at controlling the transmission of Malaria.

Biological Measures
Biologically one such way is Life Cycle Interpose  such as Larva Control, a control that involves environmental management a system where breeding surfaces such as wet, dump and watery areas have to be cleared and proper drainage system developed to eliminate the instances of stagnant waters which otherwise would provide a breeding home for Mosquitoes. The life cycle of a mosquito requires a wet surface for breeding where it can lay eggs and the eggs later develop into larva. This would interfere with its life cycle of mosquitoes the sense here is if breeding is managed, then Malaria is controlled and this can only be done by interfering with the mosquitoes life cycle. A special fish that feed on mosquito larvae would also be introduced so that mosquitoes at their larvae stage dont grow past that stage to become mosquitoes.

Mechanical Measures
Mechanical measures entailing advising the communities to sleep under nets to bar mosquitoes from getting access to the victim so as to prevent biting especially babies and pregnant mothers has also been activated and practiced. Also people have been advised to screen all windows and doors in houses or at least in rooms where people sleep before bedtime this will drive mosquitoes away. Another known method is to wear long sleeves and long pants, and avoid dark colors, which attract mosquitoes. Physically killing mosquitoes with some object is also a resort.

Chemical Measures
Malaria vectors can also be controlled by using chemicals to either kill them or reduce their population and also interfere with there life cycle by killing their larvae. Indoor Residual House Spraying with insecticide would kill any available mosquitoes at once leaving the occupants safe from the mosquito bites. Areas such as wall cracks, ceilings and bushes around the house such as animal sheds would be sprayed with the insecticide which is meant to kill them and their eggs or at least repel them away through the smell of the insecticide.

Special insecticides would also be put in the water to kill mosquito larvae before the larvae get a chance to mature into adults. Apply mosquito repellents containing dimethyl phthalate to exposed skin. Involving anti-mosquito sprays or burn mosquito coils to bar mosquitoes from flying around the house and bedrooms.

Educational Measures
Malaria will continue to be a major challenge if educational programs are not implemented designed to educate the world and more so the people in question about the dangers of the disease, preventive measures and the environmental factors that are associated with Malaria Vectors. Educational programs aimed in sensitizing communities in participating in activities carried out by the health services, such as spraying the bushes, streams and other stagnant water areas.  Health officers are carrying out trainings and holding seminars to teach people on the importance of a clean environment along with the proper uses of available malaria drugs. Through this people are benefiting from awareness concerning resistant drugs and the necessity of adhering to prescribed drugs and dosages.

Most governments budgets reflect huge allocation of funds on fighting Malaria and other related emergencies. Although this huge funds allocation, lack of political will have been a major impediment, there is still some success realized by health organizations which have been involved in training the public on the need of vaccines, proper land usage, proper sewerage disposal and observing proper hygiene. This is because without educating the public, it will be difficult for any of the above measures to succeed because the public are the most affected by Malaria and the emergency other vector-borne diseases that arise as a result of poor environmental management.
